…is evident the moment you get off the train.
I went to Geneva last week for work. Getting off the train, the first five people I saw were brown or black. The first cash register I paid at was managed by someone of South Asian origin. On the bus to where I was staying I ran into a Sikh. And on the train back to Zurich, I sat across from a Kenyan from Mombasa; we chatted about Nairobi, and how he hated it.
Then I arrived at Zurich. Everyone was white. I heard only German – or some form of it – till I arrived at Bellevue. That is expat central, so some English goes, but only some.
Zurich is a big city, with all the benefits that entails. More places to go out, more to do, more to eat, buy, see. But it is very much a white city, Swiss, possibly Central European. For all its faults, Geneva will always beat Zurich hands down in diversity. And I will miss being able to fit in, simply because nobody else does.
